Help, my mom has gone downhill in the last 5 yrs. She gets things that regular docs can’t fix. She has sciatica that has gotten really strange. First she gets pain on the top of her left hand, then her hands get cold, then her whole body, then she gets extreme gas pains in abdomen and lastly it becomes sciatica. She gets this either from doing too much or from eating foods she has become allergic to. One by one she has become allergic to all veges, pork, fish and a few more. She lives in Lyons, IL which her doc says is full of bad industry including a sight that is toxic with aluminum. I could give more info but afraid to bombard with info. Please ask if you have further questions. She is at the end of her rope. Thanks so much.

I was on the 7th floor of a nice hotel and they ended up having to take me out on a luggage cart. (a first for me sober) The pain can go all the way to your heel. The pain can get so bad you will be willing to try witchcraft or drink gasoline if someone tells you it will make it feel better.

Low back pain and/or leg pain that usually travels down the large sciatic nerve, from the lower back down the back of each leg, is generally referred to as sciatica and is fairly common. This pain can be caused when a nerve root in the lower spine that helps form the sciatic nerve is pinched or irritated.
Sciatica is usually caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve from a herniated disc (also referred to as a ruptured disc, pinched nerve, slipped disk, etc.) in the lumbar spine. The problem is often diagnosed as a “radiculopathy”, meaning that a disc has protruded from its normal position in the vertebral column and is putting pressure on the radicular nerve (nerve root) in the lower back, which forms part of the sciatic nerve.
Sciatica occurs most frequently in people between 30 and 50 years of age. Often a particular event or injury does not cause sciatica, but rather it may develop as a result of general wear and tear on the structures of the lower spine. The vast majority of people who experience sciatica get better with time (usually a few weeks or months) and find pain relief with non-surgical treatments.
good luck ^i^???

wow 2 good answers and one stupid one. I’m not sure what the first guy meant when he brought up the uncommon pyriformis syndrome, but I can vouch as a doc and a patient that occasionally, after the sciatica goes away, you get weird leg pains which are actually muscle cramps due to being out of shape. These can be muscles you don’t usually think about or worry about, like the pyriformis muscle.
Most herniated discs heal on their own without treatment. It’s no surprise ppl make claims that they took zero medications and they’re fine. However, inflamation is not always the best thing for the body to do (example: seasonal allergies are inflammation to innocuous things like dust!), and so anti-inflammatories are appropriate for something like a herniated disc. Also, if they can reduce a little bit of the pain so you can get up and be active, so much the better.
Do’s and Don’ts… Physical therapists are experts in this regard. They help get you out of bed and back to activity. They teach you positions to avoid and how to lift, sit, sleep, get up, etc. It really depends what is the cause of your sciatica though.
For herniated discs, you want to take the stress away from your discs. Proper lifting technique (or avoid lifting). Strong abdominal muscles to take the load off the disc. Be careful when jumping, crouching, kneeling, tiptoeing. Spine extension exercises. Avoid spinal flexion. Stay active so that all your muscles help to unload the disc
