Ibuprofen
Walk as much as you can
avoid stressing the spine – i.e. alway support your back while sitting – sit up straight. Could take a while to pass – weeks.
Worst case you may need surgery (discectomy) but will hopefully sort itself out
It does sound like sciatica. I would suggest ibuprofen or another anti inflammatory as well as massage with deep heat or equivalent and I also have used a hot pack for the area to get relief. You should go and see maybe a massage therapist (qualified) to help with the problem. Remember to ’stretch’ your muscles if not too sore…just lightly as this can help with the pain if you are only suffering minimally. I have also found that rubbing the deep heat behind the knee where the pain can travel to helps. Be kind to you and your body..keep as active as you feel you can with light walking … If all else fails go and see your doctor but you can try a lot of other things first.
You have some uncomfortable times ahead of you my friend. Pain down the leg, always feeling cold, occasional pins and needles – this is what I had for years until I had discs 4 & 5 of lower lumbar region removed in 1983. By 1995 the same pains but much more intense were back with me. X-rays showed nothing, It was only when I had an MRI scan that the problem was highlighted. I now have scar tissue growing on the nerve in my spine with varying degrees of pain continually. This cannot be rectified by surgery as if the nerves were to be touched or nicked during the operation that would put an end to walking. Lots of medication including morphine is my daily diet. Don’t give up but you must see your own doctor and if you are not satisfied ask for a second opinion. Good luck
Could be a slipped disc. I’ve just recovered from one. Pain killers when you really need them, but otherwise spend the next five to six weeks using cushions to get yourself comfortable when sitting – especially in the car. No bending from the waist. I had to physically get down on the floor to pick something up – or use long barbecue tongs! Put a pillow under your knees or between your knees if you sleep on your side in bed.
It takes time – can get you down but does get better. The main thing that helped me was trying to put no strain whatever on my lower back e.g sitting on the edge of the bed to get dressed. Mine took about 3 weeks to start improving If there’s no improvement by then get it checked out by GP.
I have similar symtoms and I have been diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis. The narrowing of the bone around the spinal cord. it begins (the bone) to pinch the spinal cord and nerves. that could be why you have pain in your legs. the nerves that control the lower half of your body extend out of the bottom of this bone (around your spinal cord) at the top of the butt.
it is far too easy to misread symptoms and diagnose another with something you personally suffer from – as several of the people who have answered here have done…
don’t play with your health – if gentle movement/exercise and painkillers don’t help after a few days then ask your gp’s advice.
good luck with this – and at least ring in to your gp’s telephone surgery.
This does sound like a slipped disc and it is very very painful. The pain does go from your back down to your leg and when walking it can be very sore. The best thing to do is to rest your back, try not to walk too much or do too many things. It will heal within a few weeks of rest.
Taking painkillers and pressing a hot water bottle against your back can always help.
That sounds like sciatica to me too.
Ibuprofen is good. Try deep massages, and you might even look into exercises to strengthen your back.
Good luck!
